We are based in the beautiful old city of Durham in north east England.

Puddle Productions was set up and had its first success in 2000 with a mining history programme based around the Durham Miners Gala. This popular street festival, initiated in 1871, was under threat at the time due to lack of funds and John was determined to preserve it for future generations on film. The result was 'Brass and Banners', a feature-length documentary showing the Gala and the people of the coalfield in all their glory. This was followed by two more mining histories to make the 'Brass and Banners Trilogy'.

  • Brass and Banners
  • The Colliers Cathedral
  • Miners at War

For many years, John ran the National Coal Board Film & Television Unit in north east England and Scotland, making over 300 safety and training films at collieries in his area, both above and below ground. John's father was a pitman and Lodge official at Ryhope Colliery.

Hilary's grandfather was a pitman who worked underground for 52 years, retiring from Watergate Colliery.
